I must say that I initially had no idea what to expect from this course. I'm actually shocked at how much I have learned during only the first lesson. I had no idea the groundwork for the internet had actually been put down during the late sixties during the creation of ARPANET. I actually found that to be quite shocking. I also learned that the "web" is actually only a small portion of the internet.
Up until now I had no idea that TCP/IP stands for Internet protocol suite. I also didn't know that it TCP/IP is basically what enables us to use the web at all. Whenever I had heard the term before I never understood the signifigance of this programming language. It's amazing how much goes into the internet. I use it everyday without even giving a second thought as to what goes on when I search for a phrase in a search engine. I have also never thought of there being any "owners" or "rules" as far as the internet is concerned.
Something else this lesson has taught me is the wide array of apps that are available through the web. I have grown so accustomed to facebook and e-mail that the existence of things such as voicethread or blogger.com hadn't even occured to me. I can only imagine what other cool programs I am unaware of at this point in time.
