LJ#4 - Online Communications/Social Media
During this module I learned about the various social media tools that are available over the internet. The thought that something like googledocs and other sharing tools might exist never crossed my mind. These applications are extremely useful and I'm glad that I got the experience using them. I'm sure I'll be using the very often in my future professional career.
I also didn't know much about blogging. I will probably use these to find out information about personal interests and hobbies. It's pretty useful to have all this information organized in such a manner.
It's good to know that there's so much more to social media other than the usual facebook and twitter. It would be great if there was more exposure for some of the other applications. I think the masses would greatly appreciate what these applications can do for them.
I think I put adequate time and effort into this learning module. I do need to improve on keeping track of due dates though.
Vocab:
Wikis - a website that allows the easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages via a web browser
Microblogging - A microblog differs from a traditional blog in that its content is typically smaller in both actual and aggregate file size. Microblogs "allow users to exchange small elements of content such as short sentences".
Channel - a specific chat discussion that might be on a given topic or with a certain set of participants
SMS - the text communication service component of phone, web or mobile communication systems, using standardized communications protocols that allow the exchange of short text messages between fixed line or mobile phone devices

Learning Journal Post #3
During this learning module I realized just how vast the internet really is. I never took the time to learn about the many different kinds of search engines and social web tools that are available to me. This module has also given me a greater understanding of how to perform an effective online search. I had a very general idea of how to perform a scholarly search but the information in this module has taught me definite do's in order to have the best chance of finding what I'm looking for.
Another thing I learned during this module is just how important it is to be very much in the know of the resources that are available and how to use them. Having these skills is becoming increasingly necessary in order to participate successfully in today's workforce. I had never heard the term information fluency previously but it is certainly very important to have.
I feel like I put an adequate amount of time into completing this module. One thing that i would change though is starting the assignments a bit more in advance because it seems that whenever I go to submit an assignment at the last minute my internet connection becomes temperamental.
Vocab:
Information Fluency - Information seeking Strategies
Deep Web - World Wide Web content that is not visible on the surface web
Digital Commerce - The electronic buying and selling of goods
Netiquete - A social standard for communicating over the internet
21st Century Skills:
Adapt to Change
Flexibility
Work Independently
Global Awareness
Health Literacy
Think Creatively
Reason Effectively
